Competition heats up in Round 3 of the JBCYC Summer Series
After a few weeks break over the festive season the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club ran the 3rd round of their Summer Series on Sunday 9th January. In their first race for 2022, on an overcast day with light Southeast winds forecast, a fleet of 9 yachts turned out.
Six Division 1 yachts took on a 13 nautical mile course, while the three smaller Division 2 boats tackled a slightly shorter 10.7 nautical mile circuit.
Division 2 got underway first with Denis Meredith’s yacht Wotalife getting the best start. Wotalife was soon overtaken by HiJack, skippered by Brian Horley, who beat the other two boats in the division to the 1st race mark.
Division 2 then became a battle between HiJack and Trevor Smith’s yacht Relentless; with the heavier Wotalife falling back in the light 8 knot SE winds. HiJack then maintained it’s lead throughout the race.
HiJack crossed the finish line 1st in 3 hours and 20 minutes just over 5 minutes ahead of Relentless. Wotalife retired in the closing stages of the race, as the winds dropped and progress towards the finish line became extremely slow under sail.
Once handicaps were applied to the race results HiJack’s 5-minute lead was not enough to put them in front of Relentless. 1st place was awarded to Trevor Smith (Relentless)with Brian Horley (HiJack) 2nd.
In Division 1 Sojourn 3, skippered by Rick Early, got the best start, and beat the other yachts to the 1st race mark. Sojourn 3 was chased by Out of the Blue, helmed by Paul Gooey, as they raced South down the Eastern end of Jervis Bay.
Steve Simpson in Bodacious kept in touch with the leading 2 yachts in the variable 8 to 10 knot SE winds. When the vessels turned, at Longnose Point, and started heading North back up the bay Out of the Blue and Bodacious hoisted their spinnakers. With the wind behind them and spinnakers flying Out of the Blue and Bodacious began to peg back the lead of Sojourn 3.
Sojourn 3, without a spinnaker, managed to stay just ahead of Out of the Blue. Out of the Blue dropped it’s spinnaker as they turned off Callala Beach and headed NE and Sojourn 3 began pulling away again. Bodacious, still in 3rd place, kept its spinnaker up until they turned for the finish line at the final mark.
Sojourn 3 crossed the finish line 1st in a time of 3 hours 12 minutes, just over 6 minutes ahead of Out of the Blue. Bodacious crossed 3rd in 3 hours 33 minutes. When handicaps were applied the results changes considerably with Steve Simpson (Bodacious) 1st, Paul Gooey (Out of the Blue) 2nd and Rick Early (Sojourn 3) 3rd.
With just two races left in the JBCYC Summer Series Paul Gooey (Out of the Blue) leads Rick Early (Sojourn 3) in Division 1 by 1 point. In Division 2 Trevor Smith (Relentless) leads Brian Horley (HiJack) by 2 points.
