Lukim Yu wins JBCYC Cat Classic

On Saturday 22nd the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club ran their annual Cat Classic. The race is for catamarans competing without handicaps and it was also round 4 of the clubs Summer Series and Round 3 of the Round the Bay Series.

A small fleet of 8 yachts turned out for the day, with 4 catamarans and 4 monohulls. All the entries were in the clubs Division 1.

With light Southerly winds a 17.2 nautical mile course was set with the boats circling Jervis Bay clockwise. The catamarans started first with Peter Dunn’s Lukim Yu getting the best start followed by Brett Ralston helming Catapult in it’s first race with the club. Shambala skippered by Steve Sargent was in third place at the start with John Lawrence in Sas Sea uncharacteristically missing the start and beginning the race in 4th place.

Sas Sea soon made its way past Shambala and Catapult, and began chasing Lukim Yu. Despite a determined effort Sas Sea was unable to catch Lukim Yu which led the other catamarans throughout the race.

Peter Dunn (Lukim Yu) crossed the finish line 1st in the Cat Classic in 3 hours and 53 minutes. This was Peters first victory in the race after regularly campaigning in the event for the last 12 years. John Lawrence (Sas Sea) came 2nd just over 7 minutes behind Lukim Yu.

Catapult and Shamballa had their own tussle further back with Steve Sargant (Shamballa) coming 3rd in 4 hours 37 minutes, just under 6 minutes ahead of Brett Ralston (Catapult)in 4th.

The monohull yachts started just after the catamarans and Rick Early in Sojourn 3 quickly took the lead beating the other boats to the 1st mark. Sojourn 3 lead all the way down the Eastern side of the bay being chased by Element with Rod Chittenden at the helm.

When the yachts turned at the Southern end of the bay and started heading North, with the wind behind them, Element hoisted it’s spinnaker. Sojourn 3, without a spinnaker, was caught by Element as they rounded Plantation Point. Element took the lead as they approached Vincentia and sailed towards Huskisson.

Further back Out of the Blue, helmed by Paul Gooey, and Trevor Kanaar’s Invincible were duelling. Invincible was in front from the races start, but as both yachts turned at the Southern end of the bay and hoisted their spinnakers, Out of the Blue had a smoother sail change and got just ahead. Both boats stayed close as they ran past Plantation Point and Callala Beach.

Element crossed the finish line 1st in 3 hours 27 minutes, just 30 seconds ahead of Sojourn 3, with Out of the Blue 4 minutes further back and Invincible a further 4 minutes behind Out of the Blue. Once handicaps were applied to the results Trevor Kanaar (Invincible) was awarded 1st with Rob Chittenden (Element) 2nd and Paul Gooey (Out of the Blue) 3rd.

With just one race of the clubs Summer Series to go Out of the Blue leads narrowly on 6 points, just 1 point ahead of Invincible and Sojourn 3 that tie for 2nd place on 7 points. The series is set to be decided at the clubs next race on Sunday 6th February.
