SailPass is a temporary membership category that enables sailing clubs to meet the requirement of Rule 46 of the 2017 – 2020 Racing Rules of Sailing which states that crew members must be a member of Australian Sailing (via membership of an affiliated club such as JBCYC) after their third race. Boats in breach of Rule 46 are open to have a protest raised against them.
From 1 January 2021 the Racing Rules of Sailing will be amended to require all crew of any race to be members of an affiliated club. This means that all crew must be members of JBCYC, or other Australian Sailing affiliated club, for any and all races that they participate in. This brings sailing into line with most other sports that require participants to have joined an association or local club.
SailPass provides membership for one day at a time, ie for a specified race. Clubs are able to set their own fee for each SailPass and also the maximum times that a SailPass can be issued per racing season. JBCYC has set their SailPass fee at $10 per race and a maximum number of 6 SailPasses can be issued to an individual crew member per sailing season. After this limit is reached crew are expected to pay an annual membership which will be discounted by the amount they have spent on SailPasses.
